ContexteBackground

Las Vegas has more than two million people in its metropolitan area, dozens of performance venues and art galleries housed in casino resorts. Yet it has never had an art museum in a building of its own. The Las Vegas Art Museum, which grew out of an artists' association founded in 1950, shared its premises with the Sahara West library. It closed on 28 February 2009, citing falling donations after the financial crisis.

The current project began with Elaine Wynn, co-founder of the Mirage Resorts and Wynn Resorts hotel groups, art collector and co-chair of the board of LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She chaired the future museum's founding board until her death on 14 April 2025, at the age of 82.

In September 2024, the Las Vegas city council approves the plans and grants the future museum a plot of about 1.5 acres in Symphony Park. This downtown cultural district is already home to the Smith Center for the Performing Arts and the Discovery Children's Museum. According to the local press, the land is sold below market value, and the agreement requires construction to start no later than February 2027. Francis Kéré is named as architect at the same time.

The final design is unveiled on 17 December 2025. It has been scaled back from the first concept, which provided for some 90,000 square feet. The building now covers about 60,000 square feet, with two exhibition levels above a lobby that opens onto a plaza.

The façade is a mosaic of stone quarried in the region, in tones that recall the Red Rock Mountains and the Valley of Fire, two sites in the Mojave Desert. A wide canopy extends the roof and turns the entrance into a shaded porch. At the centre, a grand staircase in red-tinted concrete climbs to the galleries like a path up a canyon, beneath a skylight that spreads indirect light. Around it, a sculpture garden planted with drought-tolerant species.

The building takes the form of the baobab, the African tree that stands here for a place of gathering and growth. The second-level galleries also refer to Paul Revere Williams, an African American architect who built extensively in Las Vegas, including the Guardian Angel Cathedral, completed in 1963. The architect describes the museum as “a gathering place where the entire community can recognise itself”.

The museum is aiming for $200 million for its construction. More than half had been raised by late 2025 according to The Art Newspaper, and that was still the figure given at the end of September 2026. The State of Nevada provided $5 million in seed funding.

Ahead of the main building, the museum is opening a space of some 15,000 square feet in Symphony Park, the Grand Central Galleries. First announced for autumn 2026, it is now expected in April 2027, with an exhibition on Monet and the Impressionists organised with LACMA and bringing together nearly 60 works. The space will stay open after the museum's inauguration.

Qui est Francis Kéré ?Who is Francis Kéré?

Il part à Berlin en 1985 avec une bourse de formation en menuiserie, puis obtient son diplôme d'architecte à l'Université technique de Berlin en 2004.Diébédo Francis Kéré was born in 1965 in Gando, Burkina Faso, the eldest son of the village chief and the first child of the community to attend school. He went to Berlin in 1985 on a carpentry training scholarship, then qualified as an architect at the Technical University of Berlin in 2004.

Suivent notamment le lycée Schorge de Koudougou (2016), le pavillon de la Serpentine Gallery à Londres (2017) et le Burkina Institute of Technology, à Koudougou également (2020).His first building was the Gando primary school, completed in 2001 and built with the villagers, in earth bricks and under a roof that lets the air circulate. He founded his practice, Kéré Architecture, in Berlin in 2005. Later works include the Lycée Schorge in Koudougou (2016), the Serpentine Pavilion in London (2017) and the Burkina Institute of Technology, also in Koudougou (2020).

In 2022 he received the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honour. He is its first African laureate. The jury praised a sustainable architecture designed for lands of extreme scarcity.

This project is being built in the United States and opens no market in Africa. The points below are lessons of method, not tenders.

The material of the place. Kéré started with the earth of Gando. In Las Vegas, he uses stone from the nearby desert. A material quarried close to the site costs less to transport, can be repaired with what is available locally and gives the building a colour in keeping with the landscape.

Shade before air conditioning. The canopy over the entrance and the skylight with indirect light respond to a desert climate, like the large overhanging roofs of his Burkinabè schools. Under the Sahel sun, every square metre shielded from direct radiation lowers the energy bill for the building's whole life.

A public building conceived as a square. The lobby open to the outside and the sculpture garden extend the street. The idea transfers easily to the continent's markets, bus stations, town halls and cultural centres.

African know-how that travels. An architect trained between Gando and Berlin is now designing a major public building in a large American city. The principles he developed in Burkina Faso hold up against the requirements of a North American client.

Just under half of the $200 million is still to be found. For its exhibitions, the museum will rely heavily on loans from LACMA.

In 2024 the opening was announced for the end of 2028. It is now planned for 2029, and the interim exhibition space has slipped from autumn 2026 to April 2027. The agreement with the city requires construction to start no later than February 2027.

The loss of the founder. Elaine Wynn drove the project and part of its funding. Her family foundation remains among the donors, but the museum now has to persuade without her.

The cost of stone and climate. A stone mosaic façade and a building designed for the desert call for careful execution. Gaps between drawing and site are often paid for in this kind of detail.

L'analyse BURSENMAThe BURSENMA analysis

African architecture is often presented as a matter of small projects, schools and clinics built with few resources. Kéré's career shows that the same principles (local materials, shade, natural ventilation, a building open to the people around it) also apply to a museum with a $200 million capital campaign, in a wealthy metropolis.

For our clients building in Senegal, Burkina Faso or elsewhere in the region, the lesson is practical. A building that takes the climate into account from the first sketch costs less to run than one imported as is and then air-conditioned. A material produced close to the site cuts supply lead times and exposure to exchange rates.

These choices are made at the design stage. Once the plans are frozen, it is late in the day to revisit material, orientation or shade.

À surveillerWhat to watch

Le début des travaux. L'accord avec la ville le fixe au plus tard en février 2027.The start of construction. The agreement with the city sets it for February 2027 at the latest.

The opening of the Grand Central Galleries. Planned for April 2027 with the Monet exhibition, it will be the public's first contact with the museum.

The capital campaign. Moving from just over halfway to the $200 million target.

L'inauguration. The inauguration. Announced for 2029, it will show whether the timetable held.
