L’Éthiopie compte plus de 120 millions d’habitants, et l’agriculture emploie la majorité de sa population active. Le pays importe la quasi-totalité de ses engrais, payés en devises, alors que ses réserves de change sont limitées.Ethiopia has more than 120 million people, and agriculture employs most of its workforce. The country imports almost all its fertiliser, paid for in hard currency, while its foreign reserves are limited.

La construction a été lancée le 5 octobre 2025. En mai 2026, le groupe a indiqué que le coût du projet dépassait désormais 4 milliards de dollars, contre 2,5 milliards annoncés au départ.Construction was launched on 5 October 2025. Le groupe n’a pas détaillé les raisons de la hausse du budget. Un projet de ce type ne se limite toutefois pas à l’usine : il faut aussi le gazoduc, la production d’énergie, l’eau, les routes et les logements, dans une région éloignée des grands axes.The group has not explained the budget increase. Le gazoduc et les utilités. Canalisations, compression, électricité et eau : dans une région isolée, ces infrastructures représentent une part importante du chantier.Pipeline and utilities. Pipe, compression, power and water: in an isolated region, this infrastructure is a large part of the work.

L’acheminement des équipements. Gode se trouve à plusieurs centaines de kilomètres du port de Djibouti, par lequel passe l’essentiel du commerce extérieur éthiopien. Le transport des colis lourds sera un poste important.Getting equipment there. Gode is several hundred kilometres from the port of Djibouti, through which most of Ethiopia’s foreign trade passes. Moving heavy loads will be a significant item.

La sécurité. La région Somali est éloignée et a connu des tensions. Le chantier, puis l’exploitation, devront en tenir compte.Security. The Somali region is remote and has known tensions. Construction, then operations, will have to take that into account.

L’enclavement. L’Éthiopie n’a pas d’accès direct à la mer. Les équipements arrivent par Djibouti, et l’engrais devra parcourir de longues distances jusqu’aux zones agricoles.Being landlocked. Ethiopia has no direct access to the sea. Equipment comes in through Djibouti, and fertiliser will have to travel long distances to farming areas.

Le coût.
